Private Quarters: Organic living in Serenbe's Grange

Sunny Whang and Heath Daughtrey are getting married in Serenbe in early November. Serenbe is a 'new urban' village, located in the semi-rural area within the city limits of Chattahoochee Hills in south Fulton County.

Using mahogany for the door creates definition as opposed to it getting lost among the stone and cedar siding, owner Heath Daughtrey said. An 11-foot picture window creates symmetry.

Daughtrey's art collection includes a Robert Rauschenberg black-and-white piece created in 1979 and is on display in the living room.

The master bedroom is simple, clean and functional. "I use this as an opportunity to only think about simplified living vis-a-vis Serenbe but I tried to incorporate that into my own home, to keep it functional and livable in that way," said homeowner Heath Daughtrey.

In the master bedroom, there is a print by artist and textile designer Susan Hable (purchased at Bungalow Classic in Atlanta) and an oil painting Geoffrey Johnson (purchased at Principle Gallery in Alexandria, Va.).

Daughtrey designed the built-in cabinetry to flank the entryway into the bunk bedroom. He took the extra step of lining the four bunk beds dead center on the door so the symmetry wasn't offset between the rooms.

Parts of the home were created with Heath Daughtrey's three boys, age 9 and 6-year-old twins, in mind. The bunk beds were custom designed by Daughtrey.

Most of the furniture in the home sits lower to the ground with straight legs.

The homeowners' favorite outdoor features include the main patio, roof garden and entry fountain. Landscaping is by Atlanta-based New Moon Gardens.

The natural beauty of stone adds to the view from the back patio and outdoor dining area.

The kitchen reflects the clean contemporary lines of the Serenbe home.

Potted plants are both a decorative and functional element in the kitchen.

The fireplace surround uses American Clay Earth Plaster, which is natural, environmentally friendly and made in the U.S. The custom application was hand-applied. Depending on the light in the house, the plaster can look like different materials, from concrete to flannel fabric, Daughtrey said.

A cozy guest bedroom is decorated with contemporary touches.

Simply White (Benjamin Moore) is in most of house. An off white - White Dove by Benjamin Moore - is in the bunk room and basement. Gray Owl (Benjamin Moore) is in the master bedroom.
