Private Quarters: Modern twist on Craftsman in Kirkwood tour home

Stryant Construction added a second story to the 1906 Craftsman bungalow in Kirkwood in 2015. The home now has 3,200 square feet, four bedrooms and three baths.

When Trish and Freddy Luster bought their 1906 Kirkwood bungalow in 2005, they were a family of two. Two renovations later, the now family of four enjoys the addition of built-in storage throughout the home. They worked with architect Joe Alcock and Stryant Construction.

Wainscoting helps retain an original Craftsman feel in Trish and Freddy Luster's updated bungalow in Atlanta's Kirkwood neighborhood.

The family room is one of Freddy Luster's favorite spaces, in part because that's where his favorite piece of furniture - a mid-century rocker - sits to watch TV. His parents had that chair when he grew up in Milwaukee, Wis.

Sliding barn doors complement the Brazilian cherry hardwoods and allow the homeowners to close off the office from the rest of the living space.

Built-in bookshelves in the home office are among Freddy Luster's favorite architectural elements in his Kirkwood bungalow. During one of two home renovations, Freddy and his wife Trish removed a non-working fireplace where the floor-to-ceiling bookcase now stands in the office space.

New seating surrounds an old table in Trish and Freddy Luster's Kirkwood dining room. The retiled fireplace is original to the home, which was built in 1906.

The lighting balances feminine and masculine looks throughout the home, said homeowner Trish Luster. The dining room fixture's industrial quality is softened against the stained glass and patterned paper by Wolf Gordon on the dining room wall.

When they bought their home in 2005, Trish and Freddy Luster could tell there had once been a stained glass window in their dining room, long since covered with drywall. During renovations to the 110-year-old home, the couple installed a custom stained glass window where the old one had been. A window seat allows the family to enjoy the light coming through the colorful glass.

Renovating the kitchen, including the addition of Thermador, Viking and GE Cafe stainless steel appliances, was a top priority for Kirkwood residents Trish and Freddy Luster. White kitchen cabinets are balanced with an expansive gray island, dark countertops and two attention-grabbing rustic light fixtures.

The shiplap lining the walls of the guest bathroom is a nod to the shiplap that Trish and Freddy Luster have seen on visits to Rosemary Beach, Fla.

Contemporary grays in varying shades, along with architectural elements like Craftsman-style wainscoting, give Freddy and Trish Luster's master bedroom texture and depth. A bench from CB2 and mirrored nightstands from Bernhardt flank the bed, from Horchow.

Textured wallpaper by Wolf Gordon draws the eye into Freddy and Trish Luster's sitting room, while wingback chairs from Crate and Barrel and older, mid-century style seating makes the room a cozy family favorite.

The Horchow wingback chair in the master bedroom is one of homeowner Trish Luster's favorite pieces of furniture. The light-gray traditional chair contrasts with a modern gray fur ottoman in the seating area of the large room.

Trish and Freddy Luster used Reiner White Design Studio to help them achieve a "modern Craftsman" look in their renovated Kirkwood home. The designer brought in this chrome light fixture to add a pop of glamour to the sitting room.

A Senegalese instrument, acquired on a trip through West Africa, rests against the sitting room hearth. The fireplace is one of the two remaining original fireplaces in the renovated 110-year-old home. During renovations, Freddy and Trish Luster updated the surround and tile.

Shiplap reminds Freddy and Trish Luster of their beach travels and adds texture to the otherwise modern master bath. A sleek standalone tub, light gray cabinetry and modern fixtures create an airy retreat.

A chalkboard wall with hanging wire baskets makes organizing easy and fun in the bedroom that Ravi, 8, and Eli, 5, Luster share. The boys' parents, Freddy and Trish, completed a renovation in 2015 that added a second story and three bedrooms to the 1906 Craftsman bungalow in Atlanta's Kirkwood neighborhood.

The homeowners' appreciation for music is evident from the floor to the gray shelves in the upstairs loft.

An upstairs loft provides a casual gathering place for the family of four. Three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a laundry area also are on the second level of the Kirkwood home.
