Private Quarters: Matthew Doyle

Matthew Doyle relaxes in the living room of his Atlanta home.

Doyle grew up so interested in architecture that his mom even bought books on the subject and specifically, lofts. He studied architecture and then marketing in college, and when he moved this year from south Florida to Atlanta for a job with a real estate development company, living in a loft was high on his priority list.

A piece of art hanging on a chalkboard wall in the kitchen was from a restaurant his parents owned that originally had a "hideous pink frame." He replaced it with a black and stainless steel frame.

Having studied architecture, Doyle was drawn to this desk.

Accessorizing Doyle's desk are figurines that are used to learn how to draw the human form.

"When I looked at this unit, the open space really appealed to me because I have a lot of stuff and I have big stuff," Doyle says. "I felt like it would work well in this space." (The custom closet, shown here, is a help.)

In the master bedroom, the bed is a heavy dark woven wicker and the red bench is new, from CB2. The nightstands are found objects.

Favorite pieces with a family connection: In the living room, an old wooden trunk that belonged to his Italian ancestors sits on a cowskin rug, given to him by his mother. A pair of Texas longhorns on his dining room table add a sculptural look and also were given to him by his mom. "I consider those heirlooms. Seeing them everyday when I walk in makes me remember where I came from," Doyle says.

The seasonal views from the window-filled corner unit are Doyle's favorite outdoor feature. In January and February, there were no leaves on the trees, giving him a prime Midtown skyline view. "It's kind of crazy because when spring started and the leaves started coming back on the trees, my friends started calling my house the treehouse," he says. "I'm on the third floor. I'm right in the canopy of all these huge oak trees. I was born and raised in South Florida. We've really never had seasons. As fall approaches, I'm really excited. I'm going to be able to experience firsthand, face to face, seasons and the changing of the trees."
