Private Quarters: Lake Lanier property for all seasons

Homeowner Janace Harding designed and completed the home in phases, first pitching a tent on the property — now called Foxtail Cove Estate — to get the lay of the land. She wanted to visualize where the home should be positioned for maximum lake views. -- Lori Johnston

The chair and ottoman as above and second chair and ottoman are by The Charles Stewart Co. at The Shops of Miami Circle Market Center. A pair of slipper chairs is from Forsyth Furniture with Donghia textiles. An antique accent table is from Jane Marsden Antiques in Atlanta, and the hand-painted lamp and shade are from Sticks Studio.

A library on the landing features dramatic ceiling details. The small space is expanded with 12-foot ceilings and cutout transom details that mirror the square decorative transom windows beyond.

Homeowner Janace Harding custom designed the kitchen, which has painted cabinets, African limestone counters and Dacor appliances.

In the breakfast niche, a custom built-in banquette with table and chairs and the artist botanicals are from AmericasMart Atlanta.

The media room features a fireplace and custom built-in TV with surround sound system feeding to the pavilion room and the outdoor areas. The antique armoire was a find at The Shops of Miami Circle Market Center, the stone coffee table was a custom made, the leather chairs from Lewis and Sheron Textiles, and all the textiles are from Atlanta Decorative Arts Center Donghia showroom. Leather pillows are from AmericasMart Atlanta.

A group of ceramic figurative sculptures by Marilee Hall were purchased at the American Craft Council Show held in Atlanta each spring.

Harding commissioned a 6-foot tall painting of a lakeside sunset. The room also has an antique shirted table. Chairs by Hickory Chair and Italian-carved frame tapestry chairs were purchased at the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center; the gnarled "root" chairs are from the AmericasMart Atlanta.

“It’s a summer home that has a beach and water feel in the summertime, and in the winter it’s a rich, warm kind of a mountain home, and I use it like that,” she said. “I’ll do a lot of baking in the house in the wintertime. Then I’m outside a lot in the summertime.” -- Text by Lori Johnston

An awards wall displays ASID Design of Excellence Awards from 1996 to 2012 received by the homeowner's design firm over 15 years.

The desk niche features a desk and chair from American Furniture with an over-scaled lamp from The Painted Monkey in Roswell and photographic art from homeowner's Egyptian travels. Favorite interior design feature: Seven stone fireplaces capture the feeling and character of a mountain home. -- Text by Lori Johnston

The master bath features identical his and hers custom demilune maple and limestone vanities floating in a niche. A floor-to-ceiling mirror offers direct and indirect lighting.

A 12-foot window in the sunroom offers a lake view. Furniture is by Bernhardt Furniture, the rug is from AmericasMart Atlanta. The painting is by Atlanta artist, Paige Harvey, from Fay Gold Gallery, and the room has an antique family coffee table.

Interior design style: Eclectic and casual elegance. For example, the leather furniture blends comfortably with tropically colored artwork, all of which were assembled over time, she said. -- Text by Lori Johnston

Decor tip: A home is a haven, so design each space to be an intimate experience, Harding said. She focused on making each space, from the open kitchen to the master suite to the outdoor spaces, feel like a private retreat, whether she’s at home by herself or hosting a small dinner party of lawn party with 100 people. -- Text by Lori Johnston

Buying 3 acres of land on Lake Lanier just before the 1996 Atlanta Olympics kicked off nearly a decade of devotion to creating the right waterfront retreat. “The goal was to create a very personalized retreat, a place that would be home but also vacation,” she said. -- Text by Lori Johnston

Flower planters feature birdhouses purchased at the Duluth Fall Festival that were meant to be decorative but used by birds to build a nest.

Favorite outdoor feature: Panoramic view from the stone terrace with two stone wood-burning fireplaces (one for cooking and one for gathering around on cool nights). The stone terrace provides seating on the lawn to watch the sunset, she said. -- Text by Lori Johnston

The lake view side of the estate gets a full sunset view on the open water from Memorial Day to mid-July and a sunset view year, homeowner Janace Harding said. One outdoor fireplace is for gathering and one is for cooking.
