Private Quarters: Industrial meets French farmhouse in Castleberry Hill

2,100 square feet, one bedroom, one bathroom

Most of the furniture found in Kelli and Lloyd Hawk's Castleberry Hill loft was acquired from antiques stores around Atlanta or the Southeast. While the two leather chairs in the living room may appear comfortably aged, Kelli says they are rare new buys for the home and were found at The Dump.

A top hat is a quirky touch on the Christmas tree in Kelli and Lloyd Hawk's Atlanta loft. The white bookshelf and dinnerware on display seem to blend into the painted brick walls.

Wooden panels divide the living spaces in Kelli and Lloyd Hawk's wall-free loft from their bedroom area. The rustic panels, which Kelli found at Westside Market, contrast with the open ductwork and are her favorite accessory in the home. "I've never seen anything like them before," she says.

The dining room, which features artwork from Outrageous Interiors, a massive mirror and burlap-covered chairs, was originally the living room when the Castleberry Hill factory building was converted into lofts in 1996. "To me, it made sense to have the dining area directly across from the kitchen, " says homeowner Kelli Hawk.

The homeowners kept the original trolley system that was in use when that area of their home contained a factory elevator. Updates include stainless steel appliances, concrete countertops and white cabinets.

All of the brickwork in the kitchen is original to the nearly 90-year-old building. The kitchen is the former elevator shaft of a meatpacking factory in Atlanta and now the space has concrete countertops, open metal shelving and white cabinets with a painted inlay that looks like vintage tin.

Open metal shelving puts white dinnerware, knives and glasses within easy reach and as a contrast to the exposed brick walls. At the top, you can see the original trolley system used when the building was a meatpacking factory.

Exposed brick, painted white, and early 20th-century factory windows in the bedroom remind homeowners Kelli and Lloyd Hawk of their Castleberry Hill loft's origins.

Homeowner and designer Kelli Hawk changed all of the lighting in the Atlanta industrial loft she shares with her husband, Lloyd. Above the bathroom sinks, old-school glass pendants hang from the former factory's ceiling, which still has the original trolley system.

The loft's exposed pipes and original brickwork, mixed with contemporary concrete counters and bathroom fixtures, are true to form and highlight the 1929 building's past in Atlanta's Castleberry Hill neighborhood.

With no walls in the loft to separate the space, Kelli and Lloyd Hawk's home office relies on a smart grouping of furniture to establish a work area. An aged wooden desk and armoire alongside shiny and sleek lighting fixtures showcase the eclectic mix of French farmhouse charm and industrial cool in the Castleberry Hill loft.

A chalkboard wall allows the homeowners to display seasonal messages and greetings. Other wall decor in the industrial Atlanta loft includes oversized paintings, vintage fixtures and sculptural pieces.

A carved mirror and bench are among pieces in the Castleberry Hill loft with eye-catching detailing, set against the exposed brick walls and floors.

A pair of skates and plaid scarf are among winter-themed accessories in the industrial loft space. A collection of natural items accessorize a refinished chest and mirror.

When decorating a neutral space, homeowner and designer Kelli Hawk uses texture to add depth and interest. In this light-filled sitting area in her Castleberry Hill loft, warm wooden accessories like a wine riddling rack and rustic buffet contrast with the white-painted brick walls.

"Our kitchen was an elevator shaft," says Kelli Hawk of the loft she shares with husband, Lloyd, in Atlanta's Castleberry Hill neighborhood. "This was a meatpacking factory. We still have the button to the elevator shaft."

Lloyd Hawk, CEO of Friendship Baptist LLC, bought the one-bedroom, one-bath loft in a former meatpacking factory in 2002. He and Kelli, who owns Bella Espaces, a decorating and home decor company, got married in 2013. Kelli says she enjoyed the challenge of decorating 2,100 square feet of wall-free space.
