Private Quarters: East Atlanta home gets new life with space for chickens

Eileen Ansley could see the deteriorating bungalow from her front door in East Atlanta. When a contractor started fixing it up, the family seized the opportunity to move in.

The East Atlanta bungalow was built in 1927 and renovated in 2007, when Eileen Ansley and Andrew Burnes purchased the home to finish the project. They used to live next door to the house, which has three bedrooms, two baths and 2,100 square feet. Text by Lori Johnston

Athens carpenter Noah Brendel (piedmontbureauofreclamation.com) used walnut for the prep table/island, which features an egg holder from the homeowners' five chickens. The light fixture hanging from the metal ceiling is from Rejuvenation.

The kitchen was reconfigured when homeowners Eileen Ansley and Andrew Burnes moved into the 1927 East Atlanta home. They added the metal ceiling, island and removed the top shelves. The appliances are Jenn-Air and Frigidaire.

Homeowners Eileen Ansley and Andrew Burnes removed the upper cabinets from their 1927 bungalow and replaced them with heart pine shelves made by Athens carpenter Noah Brendel (piedmontbureauofreclamation.com).

Eileen Ansley inherited her copper pots from a family member and kept them in boxes for 20 years before finding a place to display them in her East Atlanta home.

A teak dining table from Manorism is situated on a handmade Turkish rug from World of Rugs in the dining room. Other international items are the antique Indian bench and Belgian chandelier.

The Fuzzy stool, made in Iceland, is among the Scandinavian items in the home. The top is covered in soft sheepskin and makes the homeowners laugh.

With an open floor plan, the main room has plenty of space for a weathered antique Indian bench and antique oak sideboard.

The renovated 1920s bungalow in East Atlanta home features signs and other vintage finds as accessories.

A curved set of stairs leads from the living room to the open dining room and kitchen. New hardwood floors were part of the 2007 renovations.

The living room sectional sofa is from West Elm and the Persian rug is from World of Rugs and contrast the walls, which are painted Pure White by Benjamin Moore.

The rug was purchased in Rabat, Morocco, continuing the international theme throughout the home of Eileen Ansley and Andrew Burnes.

A teak sleigh bed from Manorism, nightstands with clean lines and wood accents are a part of the decor of the master bedroom, which also features floor rugs and original art.

The master bedroom includes artwork from friends, family and local artists purchased in Atlanta.

A reclaimed wood dresser from West Elm is part of the decor in the master bedroom and reflects the Swedish farmhouse feel that homeowner Eileen Ansley wanted in her East Atlanta bungalow.

A stainless steel cart provides a creative way to store towels in the master bathroom, which features subway tile, antique windows and tin art elements.

The force is with son Eli, whose room features a "Star Wars" poster, walls and shelves painted Chili Pepper by Behr, original art from Young Blood Gallery, a ceiling fan that's a smaller replica of a World War II fighter plane, plenty of storage and a colorful owl bedspread.

The walls of the guest bathroom are painted Benjamin Moore Mystical Blue, a theme that carries over to the nautical themed shower curtain.

The office features a piece called "Great Horned Owls" by local artist R. Land.

IKEA furniture and framed bugs decorate the office of the East Atlanta bungalow of Eileen Ansley and Andrew Burnes.

Music instruments and an antique fan and movie projector are among the decorative items in the office.

Stainless steel shelves hold various decor items, including antique cameras, framed bugs and a framed album in the office.

East Atlanta homeowners Eileen Ansley and Andrew Burnes designed and built their chicken coop, which is on the Urban Coop Tour (wyldecenter.org/urban-coop-tour) on March 28-29.

Eileen Ansley researched green roofs on outbuildings like sheds to construct the roof on their chicken coop. She throws seeds on the roof to grow alfalfa sprouts and other food for the chickens to eat.

Pattern upon pattern give a homey feel to a backyard "shed," an outdoor room where the homeowners can relax while watching their five chickens at their East Atlanta home.
