Photos: Barbara and husband Vince Dooley, the former football coach and athletic director at the University of Georgia, decided to renovate their longtime home. See the results.

A 13-month renovation of Vince and Barbara Dooley's Athens home, near the University of Georgia, gave the house its new Greek Revival style and drastically altered its layout.

Vince and Barbara Dooley, here in the sunroom, are delighted with the improvements they've made to their home. Vince, an avid gardener, jokes that Barbara is in charge of domestic affairs, or everything inside the home, and he is in charge of foreign affairs -- everything outside.

Venetian plaster created the smooth walls in the entry, using a yellow hue that reminds Barbara Dooley of sunshine. Flowers received as gifts are often on display in the home.

A Rosa granite countertop for the kitchen island incorporates Barbara Dooley's love of color and gives a nod to the Bulldogs, with a red hue. The kitchen also has a six-burner Viking stove and a Sharp microwave drawer oven.

Civil War experts have verified that the dining room table was used for the signing of the Confederate Constitution in 1861. Vince bought it from a Civil War collector.

Georgia artist Steve Penley, who has collaborated with Vince Dooley on books, including 2012's "History and Reminiscences of the University of Georgia, " gave the painting of Civil War figures to Dooley. The painting includes the likenesses of men including T.R.R. Cobb, Francis Bartow, Robert Toombs, Alexander Stephens and former UGA chancellor Andrew A. Lipscomb.

Steve Penley paintings depicting Vince Dooley's career at UGA hang throughout the house. This portrait depicts the famous scene of Vince Dooley's players carrying him off the field after Georgia defeated Georgia Tech in 1980. The wood-stained paneling was painted as an update.

Slate tile surrounds the fireplace in the family room, which was renovated with hardwood floors and a taller ceiling.

More than 350 bulldog sculptures given to the couple abound in the "trophy den, " which was not renovated.

On display in the sunroom is one of the gnus Vince Dooley shot on a safari in Africa.

The "trophy den" was updated with charcoal walls. Favorite artworks include their collection of Steve Penley paintings depicting Vince Dooley's career at UGA, and sculptures such as the Duffy Daugherty Memorial Award, which Dooley received in 2012. "To me, it's a beautiful piece of art and sculpture, " he said.

Furniture from Barbara Dooley's childhood, including her headboard and seat, are in the "lilac bedroom."

Black and white defines the color palette in a guest bedroom with a handicapped-accessible bathroom. Black silk drapes create a dramatic effect in the room.

One guest bedroom evokes the garden feel, with green drapes and the ceiling painted green.

The property, on three acres, is where Vince Dooley has cultivated his well-known garden, which has been the focus of books and articles.
