Private Quarters: Cozy cottage in College Park

A small Victorian cottage in College Park had a few “weird, quirky features,” but Tracie Greene Daniels and husband Orlando saw its potential.

Eclectic is how Greene Daniels describes her taste. “When I began shopping for furniture, I found myself drawn to a lot of antique pieces,” Greene Daniels says. “It has some older pieces in it, mixed in with newer contemporary pieces.”

The kitchen was completely renovated. “It just had a little ol’ stove, a sink with two cabinets, and that’s it,” Greene Daniels says. They added an oversized pass-through in the kitchen to see through the home and open up the space.

The table and chairs are from Cost Plus World Market. The dining room light fixture was pieced together by Greene Daniels, who purchased the fixture from The Home Depot and replaced the plain white globes with stained glass globes. "Chandeliers get really, really expensive, so that was unexpected and different," Greene Daniels says.

The artwork accenting their walls, by friends such as Cynthia Bell and Arthur Parks Jr. and students with the Fulton County Arts Council, where Greene Daniels used to work, and its Art at Work Program. “I painted the walls white because I knew I was going to fill up every wall with a piece of art, which I did,” Greene Daniels says.

The previous owners had turned the screened porch into a bathroom with a closet, but the couple turned it back into a small sunroom. They pulled up the blue shag carpet and discovered hardwood floors.

The chess table was designed and created by Yusef Crowder, who also crafted two lights for the couple's living room.

Greene Daniels incorporates a spring/summer look and fall/winter look in her bedroom and the living room. In the fall, she changes out the curtains to darker colors, and brings in textures such as shag and velvet pillows.

In the man cave, Orlando Daniels displays his medals from marathons and the Half Ironman.

Greene Daniels painted some of the furniture in what she describes as the "butterfly room."

Framed photos by Greene Daniels add to a "garden safari" look. The bathtub is surrounded by slate.

The home's swooped roof line is a real eyecatcher. “Everybody really likes that. That’s what makes it really, really unique,” Greene Daniels says. Garden beds in the front yard and on the side of the house grow flowers and food. In the spring, flowers and vegetables are planted in pots on the deck.
