Private Quarters: Cozy chic DIY style in Lithia Springs

The Lithia Springs home, which has three bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths and about 2,200 square feet, was built in 2008.

Alaya Sheardon and Brandon Harper's Lithia Springs home, which has three bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths and about 2,200 square feet, was built in 2008. The home is the focus of many of Sheardon’s posts on her blog, Behind the Big Green Door, even though the door is now red.

The front porch has a comfy sitting area for hanging out with daughter Rhyan Harper and friends. The planter is made from their 7-year-old daughter's old crib.

A shoe cabinet from Ikea and trio of mirrors from HomeGoods add style and utility to the entryway. The bowl brings a touch of metallic to the decor, a component the homeowner says she always tries to incorporate in her Lithia Springs home.

This chair and Ikea dresser fit with the blue hues Sheardon is adding to the decor of her Lithia Springs home. The art above the dresser adds a pop of metallic, another characteristic of her design style.

The striped accent wall, made with discounted paint from the Home Depot, makes the fireplace an event greater focal point in the living room. It's one of Sheardon's favorite DIY projects.

Colors and color palettes change fairly rapidly in Alaya Sheardon's home. Right now, she using mostly blues with pops of red.

This piano bench turned end table was a thrift store find that Sheardon gave a makeover. She spruced it up by sanding the top, painting the piece with black semigloss spray and adding upholstery nails from the Home Depot.

This kidney bean-shaped coffee table from Hobby Lobby is Sheardon's favorite piece of furniture in the home. Its clean lines and neutral color means it's easy to dress up or down to fit the current decor.

The gallery wall is made from frames and prints that Sheardon found on sale at Hobby Lobby. The sofa came from World Market. The wall paint is Glidden Raindrop White. Sheardon offers tips for creating a gallery wall on her blog, Behind the Big Green Door.

Bar seating keeps the family together during meal prep. Sheardon says the natural light was a feature that drew her and her family to the Lithia Springs home.

The homeowner gave the laundry room a makeover last year so natural light from the window could flow into the hallway. For functionality, she added an extendable drying rack.

For the cork wall in her home office, Sheardon used spray adhesive to attach rolled cork board to strips of cardboard and then affixed new panels to the wall with finishing nails. She attached decorative letters on the cork to represent her blog, Behind the Big Green Door.

In 7-year-old Rhyan's bedroom, pink toys, tassel wall art and bedding pop against the gray wall and rug. Her mom, Alaya Sheardon, made over the thrifted headboard by repainting it.

Sheardon found her daughter's bedroom desk on Craigslist. The gray rug has a floral design.

Sheardon says she wants to make sure her bedroom strikes a balance between masculine and feminine. She reintroduces the metallic accents in the picture frames above the bed and the bases of the bedside lamps.

Sheardon filled her master bedroom with homey touches and unique pieces, such as an old desk and bedside table she found at Goodwill.

Sheardon repurposed a bar cart she found at a thrift store and turned it into a garden on wheels for her front patio. She plants herbs and plants that repel bugs, especially during Georgia summers.

Alaya Sheardon and Brandon Harper bought their Lithia Springs home in 2008 as a foreclosure. Now it’s a family home for themselves, daughter Rhyan Harper, 7, and their Yorkie, Cici.
