Private Quarters: Colonial-style Dunwoody home for family of 3

The home was built in the 1970s and features warm interior tones throughout.

Homeowner Renee Morehouse loved the colors in this bold canvas painting from HomeGoods, which pops on walls painted Sherwin-Williams' Mindful Gray in the living room.

A few select items, including a horse print from HomeGoods, were selected for the built-in bookshelves, which were painted inside with a light blue hue.

The living room's long and narrow layout made it difficult to have two love seats, said homeowner Renee Morehouse. She worked with designer Lauren Harris to select four DR Kinkaid chairs and a ottoman to create a stylish room for entertaining.

Upholstered spindle chairs from DR Kinkaid have the added benefit of being on casters (with custom pillows by Lauren Harris Interiors). The homeowners can change the configuration of the room depending on the number of guests.

Framed watercolors fit with the calming interiors. The paintings of a palm trees and a country road - reflecting their hometowns in upstate New York and Florida - were found on Etsy.com for the homeowners.

For extra storage and seating, designer Lauren Harris selected storage cubes with padded tops by Aidan Gray.

The kitchen and dining area are open to each other, flowing out onto the deck. The striped rug is by Dash & Albert, with custom window treatments by Lauren Harris Interiors.

The home's Colonial style has a boxy design, but there is a large opening from the living room into the eat-in kitchen. The hardwood floors continue into the kitchen, with a table found on Craigslist.

With striped walls, the formal dining room transitions nicely into a playroom for their daughter. There's room for tea parties, playing the keyboard and other kid-friendly activities in the room, which has framed prints from IKEA.

For a quick, cheap update, a set of wicker furniture left by the previous homeowners was repainted. Lauren Harris Interiors created new cushion covers for the screened porch pillows.

A striped Dash & Albert rug was the biggest new addition to the screened porch, after the previous homeowners left their wicker furniture.

IKEA served as a source for accessories in the home, including this photograph over the bed in the master bedroom.

A sectional centers the family room, which has a new coffee table from Home Decorators Collection, custom pillows by Lauren Harris Interiors and floor lamp by Zeugma Import. The rug is from Dash & Albert.

A mirror from IKEA fills the space in the family room and helps make the room feel larger, said homeowner Renee Morehouse.

In the couple's first home, the past is represented. A meaningful piece of art is a painting of homeowner John Morehouse's childhood home (also his grandfather's home), on a dairy farm in upstate New York.

Craigslist bargains include a Pottery Barn table and chairs, now used for their eat-in kitchen and main dining area. The corner wood wine rack is from Z Gallerie, and the chandelier was existing to the home.

The foyer flooring is slate, with a wood table from HomeGoods and light-toned accessories.

John Morehouse, research engineer at Georgia Tech, and Renee Morehouse, a behavioral scientist at the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, have settled into their Dunwoody home with 2-year-old daughter Kate Morehouse. They worked with Lauren Harris Interiors on selecting pieces and a palette for spaces including their family room.

The living room was redone with a color palette of grays and blues. The homeowners can enjoy the fireplace when sitting in the new spindle chairs by DR Kinkaid.

The home oozed with charming features such as built-ins, ceiling details and hardwood floors. The homeowners selected transitional furniture with Southern and rustic elements for the living room.

Extra touches in the home include decorating with plants and custom pillows.

Two console tables from World Market - also on casters for easy movement - fill in the spaces on both sides of the fireplace. A wood tray serves a spot for a potted plant or for serving drinks.
