Private Quarters: Classic and contemporary in Buckhead home

Newlyweds T.J. and Catherine Callaway aesthetically mix contemporary and classic pieces inside their Buckhead home. The owner of a boutique, T.J. Callaway often has to decide between keeping items for himself or selling them through this business. His advice: Finding pieces you love, instead of ones that fit the home, makes for a more authentic feel.

The mantle and brick were painted black to keep the look simple and consistent with the image a Coke bottle by Steve Penley, said homeowner TJ Callaway. The couch and glasstop tables are by Bernhardt.

The painting over the mantle in the living room of TJ and Catherine Callaway's Buckhead home was an original piece of art created for Catherine's grandmother. The floral scene connects with the gardens seen just beyond the living room.

The vaulted ceiling in the family room enhances the open floor plan and feeling of the home. The fan is from The Home Depot.

From the bay window, softened by custom-made draperies, the views of greenery and natural light flood into the family room. The chairs were custom ordered from Havertys, and the room also has bamboo side tables from an antique dealer in Sarasota, Fla., and throw pillows from Erika Reade.

The living room reflects how the Buckhead homeowners have combined their design styles. TJ Callaway enjoys attending auctions for traditional pieces, such as wingback chairs that were recovered, for his home and Onward Reserve stores. Wife Catherine brings in contemporary components such as the glasstop table to add contrast and make the home feel fresh.

The couple's favorite features in the home are the abundant windows and French doors, which bring in natural light and offers different views of the gardens and backyard. The curved sofa is from Ballad Designs.

The glasstop coffee table with iron legs is a more contemporary piece, set between two wingback chairs that the homeowners purchased at an estate and recovered. You can see the rug from Surya - hand-knotted in India - through a glass table the homeowners purchased at the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center.

Many of the pieces in the couple's home are antiques inherited from family members or acquired at auctions. The pine hutch was custom made for Catherine Callaway's parents and handed down to them.

Having the peninsula in the kitchen is a great place to set out light appetizers/drinks while entertaining, but the Callaways also use it on a daily basis when doing light work from home or even while talking to each other or guests when cooking.

GE appliances, including a gas range, are set amid white cabinets and white tile backsplash in the kitchen.

The dining room table is an inherited piece that belonged to Catherine Callaway's grandmother, surrounded by chairs from Havertys. The table is set with dinnerware and glassware from Erika Reade in Atlanta.

Simon Pearce plates and wine glasses, Jars salad plates and pewter Salisbury julep cups - all from Erika Reade in Atlanta - add a sense of elegant for the table setting in the dining room.

TJ Callaway's family tree, which dates back to when Thomas Callaway emigrated from Cornwall, England, to Charles County, Va., in 1665, creates conversation in the dining room, above a buffet passed down from his wife's grandparents.

A custom-ordered upholstered bed and bedside tables from Havertys are new items in the master bedroom, which has an antique floor mirror that homeowners TJ and Catherine Callaway received as wedding gift. Framed intaglios purchased from a private antique dealer in Atlanta are above the bed, which has bedding from Erika Reade. All the draperies are custom made in the home.

Antiques include French marble-topped end tables inherited from homeowner Catherine Callaway's grandparents. Custom-made draperies flank a big picture window offering views of the backyard.

A skylight is another way that natural light comes into the Buckhead home, even into spaces such as the bathroom.

The tulip painting by Atlanta artist Comer Jennings adds a vibrant color to the bedroom and serves as a significant piece for the couple. Homeowner Catherine Callaway's family and the Jennings family were friends and neighbors for generations in Eufaula, Ala., where Catherine's mother and the artist grew up. The bed, tables and dresser are from Havertys.

A marble-topped dresser that originally belonged to the great-grandparents of homeowner Catherine Callaway now is in a guest bedroom of the Buckhead home she shares with husband TJ.

The bed and end tables from Havertys are topped with linens from Erika Reade in a guest room. The plates above the headboard also are from Erika Reade in Atlanta, with lamps from Ballard Designs.

Creamware plates from 14th Street Antiques in Atlanta are positioned perfectly around a mirror passed down from homeowner Catherine Callaway's grandparents. The distressed wood console-style table is from Havertys.

Custom chairs are covered in British tartan fabric, which was a gift from J. Barbour & Sons out of London. The fabric is used for the liner of Barbour's iconic Beaufort waxed cotton jackets. Deep crown molding enhances the traditional look of the room and offers a contrast to the light walls.

Homeowner TJ Callaway appreciates furniture and accessories with a story, like how he got the antlers on his desk. Callaway killed his first buck in Mississippi on what used to be Onward Plantation - the inspiration for the name of his retail business, Onward Reserve. The property owners collect antler sheds each year, and he was able to find his trophy's shed from the prior year.
