Prefabricated homes may have received a bad reputation in the past, but now they are emerging as stylish and environmentally-friendly housing options.

Most of us have come to think of the term "prefabricated" as just a pretty term for the less glamorous trailer home or mobile home. But as you can see in the next photo, prefab is now embracing style as well as functionality.

Proof that pre-fab can be fab: Clayton's 'i-house' was conceived as a moderately priced plug and play dwelling for environmentally- conscious homebuyers.

In this artist rendering provided by Clayton Homes Inc. of Tennessee, the floor plan of its new solar-powered, energy efficient i-house, is shown. The prefab home has just gone on sale nationally and can be altered, by the buyer, in size and shape. In this example, the core of the house has a second bedroom and has been arranged in an 'L' pattern with the separate 'flex room' off the deck.
