Peachtree City family loves their shady home

Todd and Laura Strickland's four-bedroom home in Peachtree City was purchased 12 years ago to accommodate their growing family. Todd says his property has some of the best trees in the neighborhood that create much-needed shade during the hot summers.

"When we first began with design ideas for the sunroom, it was originally only going to be a mudroom and laundry room," Todd Strickland says. "As we started talking more about the project, we thought about the idea of bringing the outdoors into the house. Now we're able to spend time inside while enjoying the outdoors as much as possible."

The Strickland family eats every meal together in the dining room. The new black hutch has been distressed to give it an old-fashioned feel.

The half bookcase was designed to create two separate spaces between the mudroom and the sunroom while allowing the area to remain open. The large red lockers are each assigned to a member of the family for storing backpacks and coats.

The laundry room doubles as Madi and Kate Strickland's craft room. "We have all kinds of 'kid art.' We are 'kid art' fanatics and that is what we decorate the house with. Most of it has been created in this room," Todd Strickland says.

The same reclaimed heart pine countertops found in the kitchen are also present in Todd and Laura Strickland's master bathroom. The room features a whirlpool tub and white wainscoting with green accent color.

The kitchen received a makeover including a fresh coat of paint along with the installation of a farmhouse sink and reclaimed heart pine countertops, which Laura Strickland believes offers a warmer feel than granite countertops.

The family room has a painted brick fireplace and hardwood floors. Each side of the mantle is adorned with artwork created in a local art class by Madi, 12, and Kate, 10.

"I think most people come in the house and say that it is inviting and seems like a 'lived-in' house," Laura Strickland says. "It's colorful, warm and comfortable, and friends are not afraid to sit on the furniture. It makes me happy every day that I'm in it."

Madi Strickland, 12, spends most of her time in her room listening to music. She chose the color pallet to give her room a cool feel that distinguishes it from the warmer tones present throughout the rest of the house.

Kate Strickland, 10, loves very bright colors, which is emphasized by the striking patterns featuring bold shades of green, pink, and orange found throughout her bedroom.
