Private Quarters photos: James and Sylvia Mays moved from St. Louis to Heron Bay Golf and Country Club in Henry County, where low-country architecture is paired with resort-style amenities

The great room in James and Sylvia Mays' home in Heron Bay Golf and Country Club is the largest room in the house. Light pours in from high windows, and the white sofas reflect the light.

The Mays' house is located in Heron Bay Golf and Country Club in southwest Henry County.

"From upstairs you get a great view of both the great room and [windows] to the outside," says James Mays.

The house is built in low-country style and has both front and back porches.

The glass-paned doors leading into Sylvia Mays' office are a custom addition.

The kitchen is large and modern with stainless steel appliances. It opens to a keeping room that has a large-screen television above the fireplace.

"The dining room is one of our favorites because of the bold colors we choose to use in this room. The red side chairs were purchased in Hilton Head... The pecan dining table is 35 years old and was purchased in Columbus, Ga., Sylvia's home town, and has traveled with us all over the United States," James Mays says.

The lower level of the house has a combination man cave, theater room, party room, lounge, kids playroom and bar. James Mays' law office is also located in the lower level. The room contains a large leather sofa, large-screen television with surround sound, fireplace, bar and several seating areas for conversation. A side door allows guests to come directly from the driveway into the lower level.

"The sun room is a perfect place to relax and get away from the heat," James Mays says.

"Flowers always add softness to a room," says Sylvia Mays.

"Although we really enjoy our two-story home, one of the great pleasures is the availability of the master bedroom on the main floor. With this room right off the great room and only steps away from the kitchen, it is in the ideal spot in the home," says James Mays.

The guest bedrooms are on the top floor. "This, of course, gives guests a great deal of privacy when they are here and permits us to go on with our lives without a great deal of interruption," James Mays says.

The guest rooms are decorated in subdued colors from the Islands, with dark wood furnishings.

A fenced-in back yard borders the golf course. The yard is shaded and cool in the afternoon.
