Kingwood: Feels like you can see forever

The Wiggins purchased the highest lot they could find that was level and featured nice trees and a mountain view. They built an open country-style house with wooden floors and a big fireplace. There are four bedrooms, four-and-a-half baths and a screened back porch that stretches across the width of the house. "It's such a long view, you feel that you can see forever," said Curt Wiggins.

"We've owned lots of second homes," said Wiggins, "and I always say the most important thing is that the house feel comfortable and livable. You can't mind putting your feet up on the furniture." The Wiggins spend time at Kingwood throughout the year, particularly enjoying the fall when the leaves change. Poodles Coco and Dixie enjoy their time in the mountains as well. "They bark at everything," Wiggins laughed.

Billie and Curt Wiggins have owned second homes all over the country including Boone, North Carolina, Sun Valley in Idaho and Reynolds Plantation here in Georgia. Five years ago they were looking for a second home in Georgia that would get them four distinct seasons and be within an easy drive of their primary residence in Orlando. When they found Kingwood Resort in Clayton, they felt right at home.

The drive from Orlando to Clayton takes about 7 hours. Retired now, the couple can come and go whenever they like and enjoy staying for a few days or a month at a time. One of the draws is Oinkers Barbecue in Clayton, "the best barbecue place in the whole world" bragged Wiggins, and another is the proximity to other mountain towns like Highland and Franklin with their own special attractions.

"The people at Kingwood are really, really nice," said Wiggins. "I can't say enough nice things about them. If you have something you think is a problem, it turns out not to be. They handle everything. The golf course is wonderful, always immaculate and there's a conference center and inn where we can put family when they come to visit so we're not overflowing the house."
