Besides painting the brick, replacing windows, adding some architectural details, homeowners Lori and Eric May changed their shutters from black vinyl to wood louvered shutters for a clean, but updated traditional look.

The v-groove design is one of many custom design options for a paneled shutter.

Often found on barns, cottages, French-country and Spanish-style homes, board and batten shutters can add charm to a traditional home.

Bahama shutters are usually seen on homes in warm or tropical climates. They also can be a good choice for lake and contemporary homes.

This homeowner wanted to add a "storybook" feature as part of the renovation to her 1920s colonial home in Brookwood Hills. The cutouts on the top panel of the shutter helped.

Even though most homeowners never close their shutters, architects recommend installing operable shutters that are the right width and have the appropriate hardware.
