Family's Dunwoody house has long history

Vanessa and Jason Shapiro and their son live in the Dunwoody house that has been in Jason's family for three decades.

The coffee table in the family room of the Shapiros' home is from the 1950s. Jason Shapiro inherited the table from his grandmother, who bought it in Atlanta. It adds a nice retro look to the room, Vanessa Shapiro said.

We always want our family and guests to feel relaxed and welcomed when they come into our home, Vanessa said. The theater room is one area for the family to come together to relax, she said. There's also a guest room behind the theater room.

The kitchen of the Shapiros' house leads directly to the breakfast nook. They purchased and installed the hanging lights. We thought that they had a nice elegant, modern feel to them and they are LED, which make them energy efficient, Vanessa Shapiro said.

Vanessa Shapiro calls the reading room the most tranquil part of the house. The red roses add a freshness to the room, she said.

Jake's playroom is very fun and alive, Vanessa Shapiro said of the space where her 16-month-old son spends a lot of his time. It's also a safe space for him to learn and play in.

The Shapiros added built-in shelving and cabinets to the sitting room, family room and theater, providing storage space and places to display family photos, decorative pieces and other personal items.

The custom-made drapes add a final finish to this room, Vanessa said. They are great at softening light coming into a room and enhancing existing colors as well.

I wanted to make the room very relaxing, Vanessa said of what went into this bedroom. We wanted it to be spa-like quality. The aqua blue against the stark white is very calming.

"Our favorite aritectual feature of our home is probably the foyer," said Vanessa Shapiro.

The fireplace is original to the house but was updated with a gas fire.

The dining room is spacious. The table and chairs were a gift from Jason's family.
