A California dream home in metro Atlanta

Jennifer and Justin Beals have torn down the original house that stood on their property but have created a modern California-inspired dream home keeping the south and its culture in mind. The multi-stage process took five years to finish the four bedroom, three bathroom, 3,500-square-foot house.

Justin and Jennifer Beals hang out in the kitchen of their modern, California-inspired home. "My favorite part of the home is definitely the kitchen. When we were designing the home the kitchen was the focal point. We even built a computer into the granite countertop to look up recipes," Jennifer says.

The countertops in the Beals' kitchen are syle stone and granite with red Ikea cabinets."We decided to save money on cabinets so we could splurge on Viking appliances," Justin Beals says.

"We entertain as much as we can," Justin Beals says. "Jennifer and I tried to make it comfortable so people can hang out for a long period of time; an oasis in the city."

The master bedroom is located on the second floor of the Beals residence with a built-in bathtub. "Jennifer and I chose to have large windows to have a constant connection with the outside and everything that is going on around us," Justin Beals says.

The inspiration for the bathtub in the master bedroom was drawn from Japanese soaking tubs. During the construction of what the Beals refer to as "the tower," the tub was poured from the same concrete as the polyform structure.

"We tried to be energy efficient in a different way than most," Justin Beals says. "We wanted to make the space very modifiable. With the large windows letting the light in, very little heat is used to keep the room warm. I think using different spaces and how they interconnect with each other you can manage appropriate temperatures and use less energy."

Jennifer Beals, who is starting two software companies, has the luxury of working from home. Her office looks onto the backyard where 100-year-old pecan trees grow on the property.

The guest bathroom has a river stone floor and open shower that uses a point of use water heater to save energy.

The walk-out basement of the home is used as the entertainment center for the tech savvy couple. Justin and Jennifer Beals started construction on what they refer to as 'the tower' in 2000.

"The fireplace is a homage to the old house," Justin Beals says. "Common in the South is to find an old homestead with a stone chimney standing after the wooden structure of the house has fallen down. That is what we created for our original home that was on this property."
