Atlanta is a hot destination for Labor Day weekend, ranking fourth in a Priceline.com survey of the top Labor Day destinations. If you can find time to hit the stores between all the events (DragonCon, AJC Decatur Book Festival, Chick-fil-a college football kickoff and more) , you will find quite a few deals.
As always, some deals are better than others. Here are some of the things you should and shouldn't) consider while shopping during Labor Day weekend.
Since retailers are making room for fall and winter items, shopping expert Andrea Woroch says to look for swimsuits and summer apparel at up to 80 percent off. The list of discounted items also includes t-shirts, shorts and sunglasses adds Brent Shelton of FatWallet.com . Check retailers such as AERO, PacSun and more.
Back to school gear should also be discounted up to 50 percent off during Labor Day sales at stores like Macy's, Woroch says. Get penny deals at stores like Staples and Office Depot, which offer basic supplies for as little as one cent. Shelton suggests shoppers also look for deals on backpacks and laptops for an average discount of 25 percent off.
It is also a good time to purchase outdoor items such as patio furniture, grills accessories like fire pits from stores including Target, World Market and Pier 1. The savings also apply to items such as swing sets and pools, says Shelton.
Stores like Cabela's, Wal-Mart, and Bass Pro Shops will be offering savings up to 30 percent off on seasonal sports apparel for baseball, golf, camping and other warm weather sports.
If you're in the market for a new car, Labor Day could be one of your best shopping weekends, says Woroch. Dealers make room for new vehicles by lowering prices on older-models.
Make plans now for travel during Thanksgiving or Christmas weeks and you will take advantage of flight and hotel deals offered this holiday weekend, Woroch says. Last year, airlines like Frontier were known to offer one-way deals as low as $30 around Labor Day, while you can find reservations through early October at up to 50 percent off at hotel-booking sites like Hotels.com .
According to the deal pros at Wallethub.com, September is the best time to buy certain electronics such as tablets, as well as dishwashers and strollers. But Woroch says wise shoppers will avoid buying fall or winter clothing, Apple or other electronics, items for Halloween or toys, as prices for these items will be much better at a later time.
Be on the lookout on HDTVs or video game consoles bundled with store gift cards, says Shelton. If you shop at the store regularly this is another way to add to your savings.
And finally, if you are traveling during Labor Day Weekend and don't plan to spend you time shopping, don't worry, Shelton says.
Many of the sales continue into the following week both in-stores and online.
