Former Atlanta Brave David Ross, despite a rather odd sci-fi-themed salsa tonight, managed to survive a double elimination and land into the top five on "Dancing With the Stars."

He outlasted Nancy Kerrigan, a superior dancer, and "The Bachelor" Nick Viall, a comparable dancer.

This is proof yet again that likable male dancers with modest dancing skills will outlast better female dancers. (Past examples of dancers that managed to finish fourth to sixth place: Jerry Springer, John Ratzenberger, David Arquette, Bill Engvall.)

Of the final seven dancers tonight, Ross received the second-lowest scores, only beating out Bonner Bolton, another male dancer coasting more on his personality and looks than his dancing. Still, he managed generous 8s across the board from the judges.

A week after Heather Morris was ousted after perfect scores, Kerrigan's received all 9s for her tango. It didn't matter. The voters get 50 percent of the score.

The final three is still likely to be Rashad Jennings, Normani Kordei and Simone Biles.
