TV best bets with Ricky Gervais, Josh Groban, Alfre Woodard, Aretha, Idris Elba

Netflix, of course, brings out big-name star power this Friday: Ricky Gervais stars as a (shocking!) sardonic widower in “After Life” while Alfre Woodard tries to get her groove back in “Juanita.”

On PBS, Josh Groban charms the ladies while CBS fetes the late great Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin. And fine actor Idrid Elba will stretch his comedic chops on “Saturday Night Live” Sunday.

And “Serial” fans will eat up HBO’s “The Case Against Adnan Sayed.”

“Josh Groban Bridges: In Concert From Madison Square Garden” 8 p.m. GPB - Guests include Jennifer Nettles and Idina Menzel. 

“The Bachelor” 8 p.m. ABC — Colton and the three remaining women embark on a journey to the Algarve region of Portugal.

“Leaving Neverland” 8 p.m. HBO (part 2) — Two men talk about being sexually abused as children by Michael Jackson.

“The Resident” Fox 8 p.m. — The surgeons are determined to shut down Quovadis after Henry Barnett almost loses his life due to a device malfunction.

“I Am the Night” 9 p.m. TBS (first season finale) — When Fauna hears what happened to Jimmy Lee, she searches for a way home; as Watts explodes around her into chaotic riots, Fauna's way out harbors a nightmarish trap; Jay stews in a cell that overflows with rioters until he hatches a desperate plan.

“The Passage” 9 p.m. Fox — Amy experiences symptoms of the virus that indicate she is close to turning, so Brad brings everyone together.

“The Enemy Within” 10 p.m. NBC — When a former CIA operative is murdered, Keaton enlists Shepherd to help recover valuable intel that could take down Tal once and for all.

“The Good Doctor” 10 p.m. ABC — Dr. Shaun Murphy is desperate to join the team on a dangerous procedure involving a patient's tumor removal.


“The Bachelor” 8 p.m. ABC — The rejected women get their say about Colton.

“Hoarders” 8 p.m. A&E (10th season debut) — Andy and Becky feel it is their constitutional right to live however they choose, even if that's among 250 tons of hoard.

“The Haves and the Have Nots” 9 p.m. OWN — Wyatt takes the witness stand intent on revenge..

“This is Us” 9 p.m. NBC — Kevin keeps a secret from Zoe.

“The Rookie” 10 p.m. ABC — When a prison bus crashes, all units must respond as some inmates face severe injuries while others seek an opportunity to flee.

“Miracle Workers” 10:30 p.m. TBS — Craig helps God recruit a prophet; Sanjay heads to the basement to help save Earth


“Survivor” 8 p.m. CBS — Keith and Reem attempt to get along while trying to survive on the "Edge of Extinction."

“Gordon Ramsay's 24 Hours to Hell & Back” 8 p.m. Fox — Gordon Ramsay's "Hell on Wheels" travels to Los Angeles to revamp two restaurants, Social and M'Dears Bakery & Bistro.

“The Real Housewives of New York” 9 p.m. Bravo (11th season debut) — It's been one crazy summer for the housewives; Bethenny struggles with the passing of her boyfriend, Dennis; Luann comes to terms with her relapse; Ramona learns to swim; Sonja adjusts to her apartment; Dorinda and Luann don't speak to each other.

“Grey’s Anatomy” 8 p.m. ABC Meredith finds herself having to side with either Alex or DeLuca during a difficult situation.

“Gotham” 8 p.m. Fox After Gordon is shot in an attempt to establish a cease-fire, he hallucinates a trial for his life that could have deadly real consequences.

“Hollywood Medium” 8 p.m. E!  Former "Real Housewives of Atlanta" castmate Kenya Moore gets a reading.

“Superstore” 8 p.m. NBC  Amy and Cheyenne attend Cloud 9 Academy to advance their careers.

“Top Chef” 8 p.m. Bravo — The day has come when the final four chefs must cook with the world's smelliest fruit, durian, which is a delicacy in Macau.

“The Rap Game” 10 p.m. Lifetime (fifth season finale)  Sire, Tyeler and Nya are competing for the win. 

“For the People” 10 p.m. ABC (second season debut)  Sandra, with the help of new investigator Ted, defends a teenage gamer whose online argument leads to a police raid that ends with the death of a U.S. senator.


“After Life 3:01. a.m. Netflix (new series)  Tony (Ricky Gervais) had a perfect life. But after his wife Lisa dies, Tony changes. After contemplating taking his own life, he decides instead to live long enough to punish the world by saying and doing whatever he likes from now on.

“Juanita 3:01. a.m. Netflix   Alfre Woodard stars in this adaptation of a Sheila Williams book about a woman who finds new purpose and hope on a trip to Montana. 

“Fresh Off the Boat” 8 p.m. ABC — Eddie leaves home after his mom tells him he's too immature to go on a student exchange trip to Taiwan.

“Last Man Standing” 8 p.m. Fox — Mike begrudgingly invites Ryan to his weekly poker game, but immediately regrets it when Ryan gets the guys to open up about their feelings. 

“MacGyver” 8 p.m. CBS — MacGyver and team are asked to solve a locked-door mystery when a man working inside a remote, ultra-secure international seed vault disappears.

“Proven Innocent” 9 p.m. Fox — Madeline takes on the case of Sarah Bukhari, a woman sentenced to 25 years in prison for murdering her newborn child.

“The Blacklist” 9 p.m. NBC — The Task Force delves into the unregulated world of cryptocurrency in order to stop an impending attack, while Red undertakes a risky endeavor in order to secure his freedom.

“Hawaii Five-O” 9 p.m. CBS — Tani and Junior go undercover at a gym to track down a deadly batch of steroids that's killing users, before the drugs claim any more victims.

“Blue Bloods” 10 p.m. CBS — After a woman is murdered in her apartment, Danny and Baez turn to her daughter, Margo, for help, but instead she complicates the investigation.

“The Case Against Adnan Sayed” 9 p.m. Sunday HBO (new series) — The four-part documentary series explores the 1999 disappearance and murder of 18-year-old Baltimore County high school student Hae Min Lee, and the subsequent conviction of her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed.

“Shameless” 9 p.m. Sunday Showtime (ninth season finale) — The Gallaghers decide what to do with a bedridden Frank.

“The Walking Dead” 9 p.m. Sunday AMC — Daryl's daring rescue mission forces Alpha to unleash a group of her own to retrieve what belongs to her.

“Good Girls” 10 p.m. Sunday NBC — Rio forces Beth, Annie and Ruby to solve a problem with a possible witness, which challenges the women's morality.

Shark Tank” 10 p.m. Sunday ABC — Entrepreneurs from Arcadia and Folsom, Cal., have a solution to fight back against telemarketers and scammers; entrepreneurs from Oakland present an easy-to-use 3D printer for kids to design and print their own toys; an entrepreneur from New York pitches her savings.
