B98.5 morning host Melissa Carter and her partner Katie Jo welcomed a baby today at 3:59 p.m. EST.

"He's here and he's perfect," she told Jeremy Powell, her producer who sent out the news today.

She and her partner had hired a surrogate from the Pacific Northwest. Doctors had embryos from both women inserted into the surrogate's uterus and one of them took.

Carter told listeners in the spring that they had been trying to have a baby for six years.

Here's Carter's Tweet:

Her partner Katie Jo has chosen to use a pseudonym on air for professional reasons.

Kara Leigh, who works at B98.5 and has been on air part time, is Carter's fill-in. Carter said she will be back on air Monday, October 27.

Carter joined B98.5 last year after a stint at what was then All News 106.7 and is now known as NewsRadio 106.7. Before that, she spent a decade on Q100's Bert Show, where she talked openly about having children. She was the first openly gay radio host on Atlanta radio.

B98.5 is part of Cox Media Group, which also includes The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
