“Stranger Things,” “Fleabag,” “Succession” and “Watchmen” are among the nominees this year for the prestigious Peabody Award, handed out each year by the the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia.
The 60 nominees cover a range of scripted shows, documentaries, podcasts and news reports addressing topics such as the criminal justice system, repercussions of the #MeToo movement, and immigrant rights, according to the Peabody Awards board.
The Peabody Awards, which began in 1940, usually receive around 1,000 entries a year. Of the 60 nominees, 30 will make the final cut later this spring.
Scripted shows shot in Atlanta “Stranger Things”on Netflix and “Watchmen” on HBO were nominated.
The picks generally spread the wealth among different networks and services.
Notable nominated shows include OWN’s “David Makes Man,” HBO’s “Succession,” Amazon Prime’s “Fleabag,” Apple TV+’s “Dickinson,” Hulu’s “Ramy,” Disney+’s “Float,” HBO’s “Cherynobyl” and Netflix’s “When They See Us.”
Among documentaries are Showtime’s “16 Shots” about a black teen shot by police, CNN’s “Apollo 11” on Hulu about the 1969 moon landing, Lifetime’s “Surviving R. Kelly,” HBO’s “Leaving Neverland” about Michael Jackson, Amazon Prime’s “One Child Nation” about China’s one-child policy and Showtime’s “Wu Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men.”
The podcasts nominated included “Dolly Parton’s America,” “Finding Fred” about Mr. Rogers and “The Catch and Kill Podcast with Ronan Farrow” about Harvey Weinstein and the #MeToo movement.
