While most of the nominees for a Best Original Song Oscar are shrug-worthy, on a brighter musical note, at least the Academy didn't overlook "Amy," the visceral, heartbreaking documentary from Asif Kapadia about the life and early death of singer Amy Winehouse

(I talked to the director upon the film's release last year – you can read our interview here ).

“Amy” is nominated for Best Documentary Feature, where it will square off with another music-themed doc, Netflix’s Nina Simone story, “What Happened, Miss Simone?", along with “Cartel Land,” The Look of Silence” and “Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom.”

The Oscars will air Feb. 28 on ABC.
