Why settle for one theme when you can feature three?
This year's Atlanta Opera Ball, planned for 6 p.m. Oct. 17 at the St. Regis, will reflect the Parisian atmosphere of "Boheme, " the fun and frivolity of "Pirates of Penzance" and the masquerade ball romance of "Romeo and Juliet."

Attire for the event, chaired by Mary Calhoun and honoring Martha Thompson Dinos, is black tie and masks.
"The opera lends itself to a little more theater, " Calhoun explained. She's excited about the dramatic decor being created by Tony Brewer and auction items including trips and unique dining events such as a progressive dinner at Krog Street Market and a culinary tour of Buford Highway.
"We have focused the auction on experiences, " she said.
Proceeds support opera productions and the Student Shorts and Studio Tour programs, which serve more than 12,000 students in grades K-12 each year.
Individual tickets are $350. Patron tickets are $1,500 per couple and include an invitation to the Oct. 8 patron party at Buckhead's famed Calhoun Estate, known as the "Pink Castle."

The Atlanta Opera's lively and engaging new production of Giacomo Puccini's "La Bohème "captures the romance and optimism of young love in the City of Light, but it also doesn't shy away from showing us the city's grittier side," reviewer Andrew Alexander wrote in the AJC. " With fantastic melodies and a simple but moving storyline, 'La Bohème' is a timeless classic for longtime fans and first-timers alike. Against the backdrop of an engagingly complex city, the Atlanta Opera's lively and quickly paced production brings out the universal appeal and heart-melting melodies of Puccini's great work."
