A good portion of the movie, for which Oprah Winfrey served as both a producer and cast member, filmed in metro Atlanta. (We interviewed a 12-year-old actress from Kennesaw who played a key, heartbreaking role in one of the scenes filmed in Atlanta; see that interview here.)
But key scenes were completed in the town made infamous when peaceful Civil Rights Movement marchers were attacked on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in 1965, an ugly chapter of history depicted in the movie.
"With deep gratitude to the people of Selma, Ala., we are proud to share this powerful film depicting the historic events that took place there 50 years ago," Winfrey said in a statement. "I hope generations will watch the film and share their stories of remembrance and history together."
