Robert De Niro's film "The War With Grandpa" has moved to Atlanta after originally planning to shoot in Toronto, according to a story in The Hollywood Reporter . The change happened at the last second.
The story noted that Toronto remains a very hot place to shoot films and TV shows. Canada, with comparable tax credits for production companies, fights with Georgia for productions.
The comedy stars De Niro and Christopher Walken and is clearly not Oscar material based on the description. It sounds more like a "Home Alone" construct. When a young grandson has to give up his room to his grandpa (De Niro), the boy engages in a series of pranks to get his grandpa out but the old man fights back.
The film is set for major theater release October 20.
De Niro shot another film in Atlanta with a similar name "Dirty Grandpa" in 2015 with Zac Efron. With an estimated budget of $27.5 million, the film came out last year and brought in $35.6 million in domestic gross and $58.5 million more internationally. It received a dismal 11 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and only 45 percent of folks who posted a review there liked it. Several critics placed the film among its worst of the year.
He also shot part of "Last Vegas" in 2013 in Atlanta.
