The fatal car wreck the late U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy caused in 1969 has inspired a new thriller, "Chappaquiddick."
The incident killed campaign worker Mary Jo Kopechne and the scandal remained attached to Kennedy for the rest of his life, although it did not deter Massachusetts voters from sending the powerhouse Democrat to Congress for 47 years.

Kennedy pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of a crash after causing injury, saying he had driven his car into the water accidentally. He failed to report the accident for hours, saying his judgment had been impaired"by a jumble of emotions—grief, fear, doubt, exhaustion, panic, confusion and shock," according to "Senatorial Privilege: The Chappaquiddick Cover-up," by Leo Damore.
"50 Shades of Grey" director Sam Taylor-Johnson is in talks to direct, the Hollywood Reporter says.
"I've done a lot of true life stories, many sports stories, but this one had a deep impact on this country," producer Mark Ciardi told The Hollywood Reporter. "Everyone has an idea of what happened on Chappaquiddick and this strings together the events in a compelling and emotional way. You'll see what he had to go through."
