Dish of the Week: Chimichangas at Bone Garden Cantina

Monday is chimichanga day at Bone Garden Cantina, the Westside Tex-Mex joint operated by the team behind the Vortex.

The special had caught my eye a few times before, but, until recently, I hadn’t visited Bone Garden on a Monday. When I told the waiter I was considering the chimichangas, his one-word response guaranteed my order: “Smart.”

The chimichangas at Bone Garden are not deep-fried, but any criticisms end there. This version of the enduring Tex-Mex staple is made with flour tortillas rolled around chicken, fresh avocado and refried black beans, then topped with savory, yellow queso sauce.

Though they’re available for lunch, these chimichangas pair perfectly with a few beers or margaritas, so perhaps they’re better suited to dinner or a heavy happy hour — not that anyone would judge you for drinking during lunch hours at Bone Garden.

Served with yucca fries, the Monday chimichangas are a microcosm of what makes Bone Garden such a successful restaurant: They’re colorful, flavorful, salty and fun.

Nobody’s a fan of Mondays, but at least there’s a plate of chimichangas that anyone could look forward to on that day.
