The Chop Chop Bowl at Chiringa provides a nice escape from the late-summer heat.

With the late-summer thermometer regularly reading above 90, it makes you yearn for an escape to the beach — not likely with school back in session. So, why not bring the beach to Atlanta? That's the thinking behind Chiringa, a beach-themed restaurant in downtown Alpharetta. Order the Chop Chop Bowl, and the illusion feels complete.

Chiringa is the sister restaurant to Chiringo in Grayton Beach, Florida, so its roots really are in the sand. And, the strong flavors in dishes like the Chop Chop Bowl complement the restaurant’s vibe and decor. This isn’t overpriced, touristy beach food rebranded for the city — the typical grain and salad bowl has been punched up with an intense curry sauce.

The other elements of the Chop Chop Bowl are well-executed: The yellow rice is tender, the chicken is nicely grilled, and the lettuce is crisp and fresh. But, the sauce makes all the difference: thick and vibrant yellow, redolent with classic curry spices. It’s also a hearty portion of healthy foods — something you actually don’t often find at the beach.

At Chiringa, escape is possible, but you won’t have to feel guilty about it.
