Remember this Restaurant?: Sundown Cafe on Cheshire Bridge

Feb 25, 2016

Before Eddie Hernandez and Mike Klank hit the culinary jackpot with their popular Taqueria del Sol restaurants, they created an Atlanta classic with Sundown Cafe (the pair first met when Hernandez worked in the kitchen at Klank's first venture, Azteca Grill in Clayton County).

Opened in 1991 at 2165 Cheshire Bridge Road, Sundown planted the seeds for what would later become Taqueria del Sol. The menu featured the Mexican-meets-Southern menu items Taqueria del Sol is now known for.

The restaurant closed in 2005 to become the third Taqueria del Sol location, which some customers bristled at.

"When we closed Sundown, people said, 'You can't do that.' They were mad and some are still mad, " Klank told the AJC in 2013.

Taqueria del Sol now has four Georgia locations (Decatur, Westside, Cheshire Bridge and Athens) and one Nashville location.

Take a look back at Sundown Cafe below, and leave your memories of the restaurant in the comments.
