Georgia breweries had an impressive showing at this year's Great American Beer Festival, held Oct. 5-7 in Denver.
Five Georgia breweries were recognized in seven categories. Moon River Brewing Co. in Savannah was a big winner -- the brewery got a gold in the Belgian-style Witbier category with its Wild Wacky Wit and was also named Mid-Sized Brewpub and Mid-Sized Brewpub Brewer of the Year.
The rest of the Georgia winners hailed from Atlanta:
Monday Night Brewing received a bronze in the Chocolate Beer category for Tears of My Enemies and a silver in the Other Strong Beer category for Laissez-Faire ( Tears of My Enemies also won the Commonwealth Cup at this year's Alltech Craft Brews & Food Fest)
Torched Hop Brewing Co. received a silver in the Coffee Beer category for It's 8 O'clock Somewhere
Max Lager's Wood-Fired Grill & Brewery received a silver in the Fruited Wood and Barrel-Aged Sour Beer category for BA Excommunication
SweetWater Brewing Co. received a bronze in the American Style Pale Ale category for its Triple Tail
Only two Georgia breweries took home awards in 2016 at the annual event , which recognizes breweries across the country in more than 98 categories (and also allows attendees to sample more than 3,900 beers).
