Ice Cream Sandwiches from Sunshine Sammies

Ice Cream Sandwiches from Sunshine Sammies

At home, you can enjoy your gelato or ice cream in a bowl. While enjoying a Labor Day summer stroll? You need an ice cream or gelato sandwich. And your faithful walking companion deserves a frozen treat, too.

Ice Cream Sandwiches from Sunshine Sammies

Susie Pearson and Luke Croop are the founders of Asheville’s Sunshine Sammies. They began with solar-powered pushcarts, peddling their ice cream sandwiches in downtown Asheville. Now they have a storefront with ice cream and dairy-free frozen desserts, coffee and espresso, cookies and brownies and they still find time to offer an array of ice cream sandwiches. And they’ve brought their ice cream sandwiches to us in Atlanta. We tried the Salted Caramel (salted caramel ice cream/dark chocolate cookies) and Cookie Dough (cookie dough ice cream/chocolate chip cookies) versions. These are big treats, really enough for two to share as you walk the Beltline or just sit in the sunshine enjoying the last days of summer.

$5 per 4.8-ounce ice cream sandwich. Available at Buford Highway Farmers Market, Grant Park Market, Highland Hardware, Ingles, MetroFresh, Oakhurst Market, Savi Provisions, The Local Exchange and Westview Corner Grocery. sunshinesammies.com/

Gelato Sandwiches from Honeysuckle Gelato

Atlanta-based Honeysuckle Gelato is one of our favorites. Their gelato is amazing and the founders (Jackson Smith, Wes Jones and Khatera Ballard) are community-minded and walk their talk in so many ways. You feel good about indulging in their delicious treats because you know you’re doing good with each purchase. Our new crush is on their gelato sandwiches. Creamy gelato sandwiched between cookies that are exactly the right texture - soft enough to bite through, firm enough to hold together until you finish every bite. Sandwich flavors can vary but you’ll usually find Salted Caramel Brownies, Vanilla Chocolate Chip Cookies, Butter Pecan Blondies and Fresh Mint Chip Cookies. If you’re lucky, there’ll be a Birthday Cake sandwich with big chunks of cake mixed into the gelato. Totally takes you back to childhood treats.

$5 per gelato sandwich. Available at the Honeysuckle Gelato shop at Ponce City Market or in freezers at Buddy's, Buford Highway Farmers Market, Candler Park Market, Carver's Market, Fresh Market, Grant Park Market, Little's Food Store, Savi Provisions and Westview Corner Grocery. honeysucklegelato.com/

Pup Cups from Butter & Cream

Pup Cups from Butter & Cream

Stacy Gunther opened Butter & Cream in downtown Decatur five years ago. Now she has a new location on the Beltline in Old Fourth Ward's SPX building. In both cases, the shops' freezer cases are filled with small batch ice creams and sorbets, and the shelves are lined with handmade cookies, brownies and other treats. Since the shops are in locations that are highly walkable, lots of dogs are walking by, too. But there's no need for your pup to look on in envy as you lick your ice cream cone. Butter & Cream serves homemade Pup Cups in two flavors: Peanut Butter & Banana and Pumpkin & Honey. Our five pups tried both and gave them ten paws up (they've got to keep two paws on the ground, you know). These frozen treats come in the little paper cups you'll remember from ice cream in grade school and our pups licked them absolutely clean.

$3.50 per Pup Cup. Available at Butter & Cream, 416 Church Street, Decatur, and 661 Auburn Avenue, Suite 130, Atlanta. butterandcream.com/
