Like most breweries around Atlanta, Wild Heaven has been adapting to the new normal of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Both its brewery taprooms in Avondale and West End are closed. But new beers are still coming out. And there’s beer to-go, tacos and other Mexican food, and meal kits for takeout, plus free hand sanitizer now available at both locations.

One of the newest beers on offer in 16-ounce cans is a German-style lager, with a clever name, Don’t Stand So Close To Me, that’s quite fitting for these times.

And wouldn’t you know it, Don’t Stand So Close To Me is this week’s Beer Pick

Profile

A new release in the Wild Heaven Happiest Hour series, Don’t Stand So Close To Me is a German-style lager. Brewmaster Eric Johnson says the the idea was to brew a traditional German Pilsner to be available on draft at both brewery taprooms in Avondale and West End. But with the current situation, it found its way into cans.

The beer is built with German Pils and light Munich malts, plus white wheat to give it more body, head retention, and a some haze. Traditional Saaz and Hallertauer Mittlefreu hops add bright floral and herbal notes, while the malts add bready notes and a touch of sweetness.

“Hopefully it is a beer that reminds you of more normal times when we could all just hang out on the front porch with a crisp, uncomplicated beer,” Johnson says.

Pair with

German lagers are versatile food beers that work well with the kind of Mexican food you might grab for takeout at Wild Heaven. But it also would be nice with roasted chicken or ham on Sunday.
