“The Hair Tales” dives into the psyche of Black women’s identity and beauty, explored through the lens of Black hair. According to the press release, “Hair Tales” is a “docuseries where six diverse, phenomenal women — Issa Rae, Rep. Ayanna Pressley, CHIKA, Marsai Martin, Chloe Bailey and Oprah Winfrey — lay their intimate hair tales on the table with Tracee Ellis Ross. Surrounded by brilliant voices of academic and cultural leaders, gifted hairdressers, and extraordinary sisters, the series presents a collage of resilience, style, and purpose.”
“In front and behind the camera, we were intentional about gathering a group of women of color and Black women who not only could offer their own experience but their own sense of love and joy, to tell a story that is often not told,” Ross told Forbes. “So often, culturally and societally, the story of Black women is told through hardship and through struggle. But a part of our humanity and experience is joy, the celebration of beauty and power.”

Ross, who serves as an executive producer and host of the docuseries, knows all too well the importance and impact Black hair can have — with some women going even as far as naming their hair or hairstyles. The actress and entrepreneur has even come out with a haircare line of her own, “Pattern.” “I think the biggest thing for me is that since Pattern hit the shelves, I finally have products that allow my hair to do anything that honors and takes care of my hair. I can use heat again in a way that feels empowering and full of possibility. Or, I can braid my hair one day, slick it the next day, and go back to a wash-and-go with no problem. That was not always the case. So, I feel like my hair is an expression is a genuine expression of who I am. Sometimes it’s huge. Sometimes it’s tight and neat. Sometimes it’s unruly and crazy. And, sometimes, it looks like a heart!” Ross said.
“The Hair Tales” has already debuted its first two episodes on Hulu and OWN, with two episodes releasing weekly on Hulu and one episode releasing weekly on OWN. Check out the official trailer below!
