Stock up on school and office supplies
Index cards, pens, glue, backpacks, folders: Office Depot and Office Max have school supply items on sale for one cent each when you spend a minimum of $5. Get 3-by-5-inch index cards (100 count) for one cent, blue or black ballpoint pens (10-count packages) for one cent, and liquid school glue (4-ounce bottles) for one cent. SwissGear Student backpacks are on sale for $10 each (regularly $35.99 each). Ten-count portfolio folders are $1 each (10 cents per folder).
Notebook paper, folders, Crayola items, pencils: Staples has notebook filler paper (120-count sheets) for 75 cents each, two-pocket folders are 15 cents each and Crayola markers and colored pencils are 97 cents each. Mechanical pencils (five-count packages) are $1 each. If you find a lower price for school supplies at another store, Staples will beat their prices by 110 percent with the store's "lowest-price guarantee" during back-to-school shopping season (valid through Sept. 19).
Composition books, Sharpies, folders: Kmart has composition books for 25 cents each, Sharpie marker two-packs for 50 cents and poly folders for 50 cents.
Snack Savings
Coke, almonds: Walgreens has Coke 12-pack cans on sale for $4 each when you buy three. You will get 3,000 Balance Rewards points worth $3.75, so your net cost will be $2.75 each. Blue Diamond Almonds (6-ounce cans) are "buy one, get one free." Use the $1-off-two coupon from the June 14 SmartSource to save more than 50 percent. See store for specific prices.
Lays, Doritos: Walgreens has Lays chips or Doritos (10- to 11-ounce bags) on sale for $2.50 each when you buy two. You will get 1,000 Balance Reward points worth $1.25, so your net cost will be $1.88 per bag.
Chicken of the Sea, chips, soda: Kroger has Chicken of the Sea chunk light tuna (5-ounce cans) on sale for 50 cents each, family-size Lay's potato chips or SunChips are $2 each when you buy two bags, Doritos 11.5-ounce bags are $2.49, and Big K soft drink 12-packs are $2 each when you buy five.
Kroger meal savings
Produce, meat: Kroger has seedless red, white or black grapes on sale for $1.28 per pound, fresh strawberries are $1.99 per 16-ounce container, blueberries are $1.99 per pint, Georgia peaches are 99 cents per pound, and sweet corn is 33 cents per ear. Bone-in pork chops are $2.49 per pound in the family pack, Atlantic salmon is $5.99 per pound and Heritage Farm boneless chicken breasts or thighs are $1.99 per pound.
