Help Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company choose work for the upcoming season while you enjoy free readings with professional actors.

From June 2-4, the Spring Play Reading Series takes place at the Balzer Theater at Herren’s.

Each evening at 7 p.m., actors will read from three plays offering humor and political awareness to audiences.

Following is a schedule and synopsis of the plays for consideration:

Tuesday, June2 : Sunset Baby by Dominique Morisseau director by Rachel May

When Nina’s estranged father, a former black revolutionary, reappears to obtain a piece of her deceased mother’s legacy, he discovers that fatherhood might be the most challenging revolution of all. A powerful and honest story of one woman’s journey from a brutal existence to her own liberation, Sunset Baby is an energetic, daring look at the point where the personal and political collide.

Wednesday, June 3: The Box by Marcus Gardley directed by Kamilah Forbes

Award-winning playwright Marcus Gardley takes aim at US policing and imprisonment in this hilarious satire written for 5 men who perform a host of characters across generations of captivity and freedom dreams. Inspired by Gardley’s own experience of police harassment this play takes on one of the most troubling afflictions of our time with provocative theatrical wit.

Thursday, June 4: Exit Strategy by Ike Holter directed by Kenny Leon

The story of a Chicago public high school slated for closure at the end of the year. The impending shut-down causes tensions in the school’s already volcanic neighborhood to rise to the breaking point, but a small group of teachers launch a last minute battle to save the school. Over the course of the year, they put their careers, their future and their safety in the hands of a fast talking administrator who comes on strong; but might actually have no clue what he’s doing. Directed by Tony Award winning Director Kenny Leon.
