'Dior and I" a film by Frédéric Tcheng
This highly anticipated film from Tcheng (who also directed documentaries on Valentino and Diana Vreeland) opens at the Regal Tara, 2345 Cheshire Bridge Road, on Friday. The film offers a look into the world of haute couture just as Raf Simons — a Belgian designer most associated with minimalist fashion — is taking the helm at the very not-minimalist fashion house of Christian Dior.
It is Simons’ first haute couture collection and he immediately acknowledges “couture is challenging.” The challenges include cramming eight months worth of preparation into eight weeks, overcoming budgetary constraints and tracking down one of his head employees who goes MIA.
If you have ever wondered exactly how much goes into creating haute couture, this film will help you understand. While Simons is in the lead, the film also shows the struggles of seamstresses who in some cases have worked for the fashion house for several decades. As models parade through walls of blooming flowers, we learn that in fashion, all is well that ends well.
