For domestic calls, we take it for granted that long-distance calling used to be a pricey proposition, but if you’re someone who makes a lot of international calls, you may still be wrangling with prepaid phone cards to avoid a big bill.

AT&T customers last week were offered a new perk if they're on the World Connect plan: As of Jan. 20, calls to Mexico are free and unlimited. For AT&T customers without World Connect, it's a $5-a-month option per phone line. The price of calls to Canada under World Connect also dropped, to 1 cent per minute. Calls to other locales are discounted as well; you can see what the rates are by country at att.com/worldconnect.

Verizon offers a $5-a-month plan that drops Mexico calling to a penny a minute while T-Mobile has an international rate that's $10 for calling landlines and an additional $5 to call mobile phones. Sprint offers 500 minutes for $5 a month to call Mexico or unlimited calls for $15 a month.
