Where is Hurricane Irma now? Follow the tropical storm as it plows into Georgia

Parts of Georgia could get up to 7 inches of rain before Tuesday morning.

After tearing through islands in the Caribbean and hitting nearly all of Florida, Georgia is expected to feel Hurricane Irma's wrath in the form of strong gusts of wind, flooding and power outages.

Irma’s death toll has jumped to more than 40 after five related deaths were reported in Florida Sunday and one in Georgia Monday. The hurricane, now downgraded to a Category 1 tropical storm, took at least 37 lives in the Caribbean.

Georgia's coast was hit hard Monday morning as more than 140,000 Georgia Power customers lost power in Savannah, Brunswick, St. Simons south and St. Marys, the AJC reported.

Metro Atlanta, under its first-ever tropical storm warning, is bracing for life-threatening storm surge, cold rains and strong winds after Gov. Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency in all 159 Georgia counties.

“Through our early morning hours, heavy downpours will be starting, bands of rain will come through, strong winds will begin to pick up in the area, and we could have as much as 4 to 6 or more inches of rain across North Georgia,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton said Monday morning.

Metro Atlanta is set to experience the direct hit on Monday afternoon through Tuesday, according to current models from Channel 2 Action News.
