NCAA champion South Carolina women’s basketball team will not visit White House

The 2017 NCAA women's basketball champion South Carolina Gamecocks will not attend the White House ceremony Friday honoring NCAA championship teams.

South Carolina coach Dawn Staley confirmed the Gamecocks were invited to attend Friday’s ceremony but her team would not attend.

"We did hear from the White House about attending tomorrow's event, but we will not be able to attend,” Staley wrote on a statement. “As I've been saying since our practices for this season started, all of our focus is on the season ahead. The only invitation we are thinking about is to the 2018 NCAA Tournament."

In April, the Gamecocks won the program’s first National Championship with a 67-55 win of Mississippi State.

The White House did not release the names of any team that was invited for Friday’s event. announced which teams were invited or which will be received Friday.
