Georgia Tech guard Josh Okogie survived the first cut on USA Basketball’s roster for the FIBA U19 World Championship.

Okogie, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, is the first first Yellow Jacket to be invited to a USA Basketball training camp since Marcus Georges-Hunt and Robert Carter, Jr. participated in the 2013 U19 World Cup Team camp.

As a freshman, Okogie led the Yellow Jackets in scoring last season with 16.1 points, ranking 15th in the ACC in scoring. Okogie finished last season with the fifth-highest scoring average for a freshman in Tech history.

The first roster cut narrowed the roster from 26 basketball players aged 19-and-under to 18 players. Training at Colorado Springs’ United States Olympic Training Center will continue for the 18 remaining players through Sunday. The final 12-man roster will be cut on Sunday.

The United States, in the preliminary round’s Group D, will open play on July 1 against Iran, then face Angola on July 2 and Italy on July 4 in Cairo, Egypt.

Kentucky coach John Calipari will serve as head coach for the USA U19 World Cup team.

The finalists include seven college freshmen and 11 high school players.
