The Falcons and general manager Thomas Dimitroff have agreed on a three-year contract extension, the team announced Monday. Dimitroff’s contract now runs through the 2019 season, the same as coach Dan Quinn’s.
Falcons owner Arthur Blank hired Quinn in January 2015 to replace Mike Smith. Blank retained Dimitroff, the GM since 2008, while restructuring the front office so that both Quinn and Dimitroff report directly to Blank.
“I’m excited that Arthur believed in the partnership between myself and coach Quinn,” Dimitroff said. “We are making some good headway and moving in the right direction in many ways in terms of the roster and how we are developing this team. So I’m very pleased.”
Blank hired Dimitroff as head of his franchise’s football operations in January, 2008. Dimitroff and Smith led the Falcons to five consecutive winning seasons from 2008 and 2012 and a franchise-record three consecutive playoff berths 2010 to 2012.
Blank fired Smith after the Falcons finished 6-10 in 2014, which followed a 4-12 season in 2013. Blank decided to retain Dimitroff after consulting with Quinn and gave the coach final say over the 53-man roster.
The Falcons finished 8-8 during the first season of the Quinn/Dimitroff partnership and are 6-3 this season.
“We are all thrilled about it and very excited for him,” Quinn said Monday of Dimitroff’s extension. “The partnership over the last year-and-a-half between he and I has been real strong and we have a real common vision for our team and how we’d like to play.”
