Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson smiles during news conference Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017, in Tampa, Fla., after Clemson defeated Alabama 35-31 in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. Watson was the offensive player of the game.

Houston Texans rookie quarterback -- and Heisman Trophy finalist -- won the award for “Best Male College Athlete” at the annual ESPY awards show Wednesday night in Los Angeles.

Watson, from Gainesville, Ga., led the Clemson Tigers to their first national championship in 34 years with a last-second touchdown pass over Alabama.

Watson was the offensive player of the game. He became the first Heisman runner-up quarterback to win the national title since Vince Young in 2005. His last-second pass in the title game was his 41st of the season, which broke Jameis Winston’s ACC season record.

Watson’s accolades put him ahead of Wake Forest soccer player Ian Harkes, Kansas basketball player Frank Mason III, Maryland lacrosse player Matt Rambo and Penn State wrestler Zain Retherford.
