The U.S. Open men’s singles main draw will include Georgia Tech’s Christopher Eubanks.
The two-time ACC player of the year received one of the USTA’s eight wild-card slots Tuesday, recognition as a rising American star.
“I’m so extremely thankful to the USTA for the opportunity to compete in the greatest tournament in the world,” Eubanks said in a statement. “This is a tournament that I grew up dreaming about playing in and to think that I’ll actually be able to play in it is a dream come true. The hard work that I’ve been putting in this summer is truly paying off and all I can say is I am extremely blessed to be awarded this opportunity. I can’t wait to get there and live out my childhood dream on the greatest stage in the world and see what can happen.”
Eubanks is the first Tech player to compete in the main draw while still enrolled at the school.
This summer, Eubanks has received entry into three ATP events, the main draw of the BB&T Open in Atlantic Station and qualifiers at the Dell Technologies Hall of Fame Open in Newport, R.I., and the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati. In the BB&T event, Eubanks defeated another wild card in the first round, 19-year-old Taylor Fritz, before taking out world No. 60 Jared Donaldson to reach the quarterfinals.
Eubanks lost in the first qualifying match in Newport, but won two qualifying matches in Cincinnati, beating world No. 69 Janko Tipsarevic to earn a spot in the main draw. There, he lost in three sets to Ramkumar Ramanathan, who, coincidentally, also beat Eubanks in the Newport qualifier.
Eubanks earned a wild card into the qualifying draw of the U.S. Open last year, where he lost in the first round.
The tournament begins Aug. 28.
