John Rhys Plumlee didn’t see two major hurdles standing in his way in Athens. He just saw an opportunity to compete with Jake Fromm and Justin Fields.
The Bulldogs saw a two-sport athlete with very good speed they hoped to add to their quarterback room, too. The 4-star athlete from Mississippi sent out a tweet Friday night that broke the news of his commitment to Georgia.
The Oak Grove (Hattiesburg, Miss.) High quarterback now has a good chance to become the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart when he arrives in Athens, even though that’s not his position listed on the 247Sports composite rankings.
Plumlee rates on the composite as a 4-star prospect and is the nation’s No. 20 ATH for 2019. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior also ranks as the nation’s No. 269 overall prospect in this class.
He becomes commitment No. 9 for the Bulldogs in 2019. Plumlee’s choice moves the Bulldogs up to No. 8 nationally in the 247Sports composite team standings.
The two-sport athlete also mentioned that he plans to play baseball for the Bulldogs, too.
That makes sense given his athletic ability. According to published reports, Plumlee has put up high school stat lines in single games that included 292 passing yards and 172 rushing yards.
He has a 95-yard touchdown run on his varsity resume. Very few high school quarterbacks can say that.
The Magnolia State product completed 63 percent of his passes as a junior for 1,759 yards. He threw 14 touchdown passes, but his 9 interceptions stand out. His rushed for another 599 rushing yards and 8 scores.
He missed a couple of games during his junior season with a fractured thumb.
It is also worth noting he carries a very high rating from ESPN. That service charts him as the nation’s No. 9 dual-threat QB prospect for this cycle.
