Darvin Ham has a new job – lead assistant.
The Hawks recently promoted Ham to the position vacated when Kenny Atkinson left to become head coach of the Nets earlier this year, according to several people familiar with the situation.
Ham had drawn interest from several NBA teams — including the Magic and Lakers — but the Hawks would not allow him to leave.
Ham has been with the Hawks for three seasons, joining the staff of coach Mike Budenholzer in 2014. It was a reunion with the organization for Ham, who played for the Hawks during the 2002-03 season. Ham has worked with the Hawks’ big men, including Al Horford and Paul Millsap.
Ham played eight NBA seasons for six teams. He also played internationally in Spain, the Philippines and Puerto Rico. Ham retired from the NBA after the 2004-05 season.
He began his coaching career in 2008 first as an assistant and then as head coach of the New Mexico Thunderbirds of the NBA Development League. He left in 2011 and spent two seasons with the Lakers before joining the Hawks. Ham coached the Hawks’ entry in the Las Vegas Summer League in 2014.
