After a flurry of moves on Monday the Braves had seven pitchers in the bullpen instead of the eight they’ve carried all season. But that situation may only last until right-hander Arodys Vizcaino’s expected return from the disabled list on Wednesday.
Manager Brian Snitker said Vizcaino was scheduled to pitch one inning for Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday and, if all goes well, rejoin the big league club following a rest day. Prior to the All-Star break, the Braves placed Vizcaino on the 10-day disabled list because of a strained right index finger.
Vizcaino has been the most consistent Braves reliever this season while pitching primarily in a set-up role. He’s posted a 2.38 ERA over 37 appearances (34 innings) with 39 strikeouts, 12 walks and 25 hits allowed.
Until Vizcaino returns, the Braves plan to have seven relief pitchers on the roster after. They added position players Sean Rodriguez and Danny Santana from the DL on Monday and sent infielder Jace Peterson and right-hander Jason Hursh down to Triple-A Gwinnett.
