Atlanta United midfielder Yamil Asad was suspended for one game and fined an undisclosed amount by the MLS disciplinary committee Tuesday for an incident in Sunday’s 3-1 loss to D.C. United.

In the second half of that game, Asad raised his elbow and appeared to try to drive it across Lloyd Sam’s face. He will serve the suspension Sunday, when Atlanta United plays at NYCFC at 4 p.m. Asad received a red card for violent conduct earlier this season in a draw with Toronto.

Teammate Leandro Gonzalez Pirez wasn’t suspended or fined by the committee after he appeared to hit Sebastien Le Toux with an elbow in Sunday’s loss.

No foul was called against Perez on his play. A foul was called against Asad on his play.

Atlanta United declined to issue a statement about the suspension.

The suspension means the Five Stripes will be thin for Sunday’s game. Winger Jacob Peterson remains out, as does striker Josef Martinez. Midfielder Jeff Larentowicz missed last week’s game with a minor injury.

Without Peterson and Asad, and with Andrew Carleton and Chris Goslin out with the U.S. under-17 national team, manager Gerardo Martino will have some tough choices for the starting 11.

He has moved Miguel Almiron from the center to the wing before. He may do that again and start Carlos Carmona, Julian Gressel and Larentowicz, if healthy, in the middle.
