Greg Garza on Thursday became the first Atlanta United player to receive a call-up to the U.S. men’s national team.

Manager Bruce Arena announced the roster of players who have been invited to attend the January training camp. Garza, a left back, is on loan with Atlanta United from Tijuana in Mexico’s first division.

Walker Zimmerman, a native of Lawrenceville and defender for Dallas, also was called up to the Los Angeles-based camp. Players will report Jan. 10.

Garza has nine appearances with the U.S. men's national team, none since 2015. He said Wednesday that one of the reasons he wanted to come to MLS was to improve his chances of making it back to the national team.

Atlanta United has several players who have played for the senior national team, including defenders Michael Parkhurst and Zach Loyd and midfielder Jeff Larentowicz.

Garza’s main competition in camp would seem to be Damarcus Beasley and D.C. United’s Taylor Kemp.
